TikTok Grants Users Control to Limit AI-Generated Content in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to cut down on the volume of AI-created videos appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the service revealed that it presently contains more than 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a global launch. This advancement coincides with a increase in AI content, spurred by recent video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that nearly one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding channels on a popular video site primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this output is considered mass-produced AI material, a term for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is typically illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that many people like content produced via AI tools, from digital art to science explainers, and we intend to provide users the option to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own choices,” said a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as made with AI. In total, more than 100 m videos are uploaded to the app daily, making AI-generated material a relatively small part of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be able to limit or boost the amount of AI-generated videos they see by opening the content preference setting in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Other topics that are already be adjusted under the setting include current affairs, clothing, cosmetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s policies oblige creators to label convincing artificially created content, and it forbids harmful deepfakes of celebrities or crisis events. Any believable AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be deleted under its terms of service.

In addition, the app will henceforth apply an “AI-made” tag to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an collaborative effort for identifying content made by AI. This step is designed to deter users from seeking to bypass the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also introducing a $2 million educational fund for specialists and institutions to create informative material about ethical AI use. This initiative will benefit educational bodies dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has defended its content review process, during debate over intentions to make redundant hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to cut hundreds of positions in its user protection department in London, with worker representatives and online safety experts expressing worry that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive explained that people-led review would remain essential, but AI can protect employees by filtering out the most distressing content prior to it has to be seen by people. The platform announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by safety staff over the last 12 months due to intervention by its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is why a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
