Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his designs for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently a study forecast his energy policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have risked – really, no previous leader would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with federal agencies.
We went from 'the humble will receive the Earth' into 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As bewildering as it is to witness the president try to upend the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group among Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in the Gospel; this change developed at a slower pace, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; instead, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to evade secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for others, particularly for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the attacker; his crime policy states that when a person pilfers your coat you must offer them your pullover also.
The obvious and direct fact that Christ of the gospels requests a form of extreme compassion focused on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a controversial faith: engaging for the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Best of Us
Hence I have become heartened to see the determined opposition to Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in numbers during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, with American flags during all protests and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.
We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you receive him and receive them or not?
The nation is most protected, in other words, by relationship to the finest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected by reference to what makes it unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In all circumstances does it suggest pretending the most damaging regarding America and Christianity was nonexistent; it represents both humility and belief, a blend that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
