Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
