Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
